When I see a vehicle with snow tires and I wonder if they put on their snow tires early or never took them off.

Edit: confusing wording.

We’ve been debating whether to put them on in later this month/November or wait for the first snow.

I wait till it says its gonna snow the next day, then do it in the freezing cold... I really should think about this more.

I usually take a similar approach. I’m an idiot. If only my garage was a little wider I could do it indoors, but I'm short by about 2 feet on each side.

There is a valid reason for not taking them off. When they don’t have enough tread to deal with snow effectively, but still too much to justify throwing them out.

My brother just ran his through the summer. They are now reaching the point of being decidedly unsafe, but are just in time to be replaced by a fresh set of winters. 1 more year out of the summers. win-win.

Nope, that happens all of the year. I think I worded it better.

Now that we’ve got these fancy TPMS things my new philosophy is to put them on whenever temperature drops the pressure enough to trigger the light. Should be a couple more weeks.

Yes, TPMS has made me lazy about regularly topping off my tires. Yes that’s sad.

In the case of my co-worker with the clapped out Nissan Primera which looks and sounds like he stopped giving a shit about ages ago my best guess is the latter.

I get an insurance discount for having snows from November-April, so my thinking is done for me.

You won't be confused with me, I don't use them.

My general rule of thumb is Canadian Thanksgiving to Victoria Day in May.

If you’ve got it, use it. Just make sure to replace the sensors when they go bad.

In this case, snow tires are the automotive equivalent of Christmas lights/decorations. Are they out super early this year, or did they just never bother to take them down in the first place?

I’ve run them all year round a couple times: Once when my summer rims were cracked and I was too lazy to get them fixed...and once when my summers were too worn and I was too lazy to purchase new ones.

Despite the rumors, they performed perfectly adequately for appliance car duties in temps topping 100 and surprisingly didn’t even wear much...certainly none of the tread chunking or melting I’d been lead to believe would send me to an early grave.

Somebody I used to work with drove a ‘99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo and had snow tires on all year. I shook my head every day... tried to convince her otherwise but she liked her snow tires............... Blizzaks melting on a 90 degree summer day? Check.

Depends if you have tires on rims or need them mounted. If need them mounted, get it done early to avoid very long lines the day before/after the first snow.

If need them mounted and live in the Boston area, come to my garage for express service!

They’re already mounted. On wheels that are identical to the summers, no less. Thanks for the offer, though! We’ll have to do a mini-Oppo meet if I ever head out there to visit my aunt and uncle. (They live in Cambridge)

They wear fast, but that's about it.
